Vincent McKoy kneeling in dirt at Pendergrast Farm

Pendergrast Farm is pleased to announce the arrival of its full-time farmer, Vincent McKoy! With years of professional experience and a passion for the farm-to-table lifestyle, McKoy will oversee the one-acre onsite farm in Atlanta’s premier urban conservation community. Residents can look forward to fresh, locally grown produce on the farm and meaningful conversations with McKoy and each other about sustainable agriculture practices.

McKoy is a graduate of the HABESHA Works Program, which provides individuals with basic skills in urban organic agriculture practices and agro-business development. He brings five years of experience in the field, including time at Eco-Paradigm and in community gardens. In addition, his dedication to a plant-focused diet and green eating makes him a great representative for Pendergrast Farm.

“You eat one tomato, save the seeds and have so many more plants from that, all multiplying to feed more,” said McKoy. “It is a beautiful thing to think about. There is no lack of anything if you have the will, drive and desire to do it and with proper intention.”

McKoy has already begun planting for this year and next, including crops of bell peppers, watermelon, okra, basil, cucumbers and more! As winter approaches, he plans to incorporate hardy vegetables like kale, collards, beets and carrots. He is excited to use his expertise and knowledge of urban agriculture to create a vibrant farm for homeowners, full of rich produce that nourishes both the body and soul.

“I’m honored to be a part of Pendergrast Farm,” says McKoy. “This community represents everything I believe in – sustainable living, fresh food and fostering a connection with the land. I can’t wait to share my knowledge with residents and create a space where everyone can learn, grow and enjoy the bounty of nature.”

What does a day in the life of a farmer at Pendergrast Farm look like? Farming is all about balance, which is why McKoy’s days are full of careful observation and action. He begins with an assessment of the garden’s condition and then creates a to-do list for the day.

McKoy believes in working with nature, not against it, which is why he spends countless hours tending to the plants. From preparing the soil, to planting and eventually harvesting, he carefully monitors the environment to ensure that his plants have the best chance of success. Watching a crop develop from a tiny seed to a mature plant is an experience McKoy finds very rewarding.

“I began eating a plant-based diet in 2010 for health reasons. The most direct route to being in control of what I was putting in my body was to plant it myself,” continues McKoy. “I know exactly what’s in my food and that it’s completely from the earth, with no chemical fertilizers, no pesticides. Now I can continue that organic farming practice for others while helping them truly understand where their food comes from and how precious even one fruit is.”

McKoy’s plans for the farm include:

  • Planting a diverse range of seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs so the garden is consistently providing fresh food for homeowners.
  • Developing a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that allows residents and the surrounding community to subscribe and receive a collection of fresh picks from the farm.
  • Creating educational opportunities. McKoy plans to offer a range of workshops and classes for residents, each focused on topics in gardening, sustainable agriculture practices and the importance of local food systems.

Homeowners can get involved with the farm by:

  • Volunteering their time to help with planting, weeding and harvesting.
  • Participating in educational workshops and classes.
  • Subscribing to the CSA program once established.

McKoy’s passion for farming extends beyond his work in the field. He is also a talented musician! Under the name PharmBoi, he enjoys playing keyboards, guitar and vocals with his band, Automagic.

Pendergrast Farm offers residents a unique community that blends nature preservation with energy-efficient homes in the heart of Atlanta. With Vincent McKoy leading the community farm, residents have access to authentic farm-to-table cuisine without leaving home.

To experience life at Atlanta’s premier urban farm, you’re invited to tour the community. The model home is open Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. VIP tours are also available by calling or texting 404-370-0800.
